In general there’s no specification for the number of hours that ensure a good sleep, as it depends a lot on the nature of daily activities and energy level of an individual. Most adults need seven to nine hours a night while others manage just fine with six. Some even sleep for longer hours but, spending excess time in bed can be a sign of another health problem, such as depression or chronic fatigue syndrome.
According to a British study in 2007, people who slept the same amount of time (seven hours) each night lived longer, on average, than people who adjusted their schedules to either add or subtract hours from their nightly slumber. So, most important thing is not the number of hours but the regularity in sleeping schedules.
