Vitamin C is essential during pregnancy because it helps manufacturing Collagen, which is a protein that gives structure to your baby’s bones, muscles, and blood vessels. Vitamin C is also helps preventing diseases. Hence it’s useful not only for fetus but also for mother.

An interesting thing about Vitamin C is that your body can’t store it. So, it becomes very crucial to fill the gap if it’s created, that can be done by having at least 65 milligrams of it daily. This amount can be managed by having any two or three of the following:

  • 1/2 cup citrus fruit juice
  • 1/2 grapefruit
  • 1 medium orange
  • 1/2 cup cantaloupe
  • 1/2 cup shredded cabbage or coleslaw
  • 2/3 cup cooked broccoli
  • 3/4 cup cooked cauliflower
  • 1 and 1/2 large tomatoes

Iron is required in our body because it’s used to make hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the part of red blood cells (RBCs) and carries oxygen through the bloodstream. Since pregnancy is the time of whereby this is not the concern of your body only but baby’s as well. So, more hemoglobin is required during pregnancy, as your baby’s body also needs oxygen along with your body. Proper Iron intake helps fulfilling the requirements of both the bodies.

Along with using it for the time being, fetus also needs to build his own blood supply, which requires Iron. So, a pregnant woman needs almost twice as much iron. The amount in figures will be round 30 milligrams a day.

Iron intake can be fulfilled by having doctor’s prescribed supplements as well as by consuming natural ingredients that include:

  • Dried fruits
  • Lean red meat
  • Dried beans
  • Pasta
  • Whole-grain breads
  • Dark green leafy vegetables
