Regular checkups are a valuable tool in maintaining good health. Taking proper care of your health at the right time can prevent a lot of problems in the future. It is extremely important to monitor your cholesterol regularly, because high cholesterol can be deadly if something is not done about it. You should monitor your cholesterol regularly starting at age 35. If you are younger than 35, then talk to your doctor about whether to have your cholesterol checked if:
- You have diabetes.
- You have high blood pressure.
- Heart disease runs in your family.
- You are a smoker.
As high blood cholesterol level is an important risk factor for coronary artery disease, so, every adult should have the cholesterol level checked occasionally.
Most experts recommend checking your cholesterol every 5 years. Your health care provider may suggest you have it checked more often, especially if your cholesterol is too high.
