Alcohol is the second most widely consumed psychoactive drug in the world. There is evidence to suggest that regular consumption of alcohol, may effects on brain functioning and on cognitive competence depending on the quantities involved. The number of those mental disturbances which are caused by alcohol intoxication is a very considerable one.

Alcohol is a neurotoxin that affects the brain in a complex manner through prolonged exposure and repeated withdrawal, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Alcohol acts as a disturbing element upon the nerve centers, even if it has only once been imbibed in excessive quantity. All mental diseases stand in a direct or indirect relation to the evil consequences of intemperance in the use of intoxicating liquor.
