Importance of Sleep for Children

Sleep is no less important than food, drink, or safety in the lives of children. Sleep is the power source that keeps your mind alert and calm Sleep promotes alertness, memory and performance. Children who get enough sleep are more likely to function better and are less prone to behavioral problems and moodiness. Most research states that a good 8 to 9 hours a night is sufficient for most school aged children.

Sleep is a vital need, essential to a child’s health and growth. A bedtime ritual makes it easier for child to relax, fall asleep and sleep through the night. Children need the proper amount of sleep consistently each night to lead a productive day. Sleep not only provides an opportunity for the body to physically rest, it also consolidates a brain or reinforces what a child has learned or observed during the day.

Poor sleep habits can influence children diet, moods, cognitive skills, and ability to carry out daily chores. Sleep deprived children tend not to do well at school. Other symptoms of sleep deprivation in children include such as fatigue, inattentiveness, irritability, impatience, fussiness and even aggressive behavior.
