Depression affects a lot of people in many different ways. Some have high health risk due to depression and others don’t have any obvious risk. According to researches, women are nearly twice as likely as men to experience depression, reason being the social status, responsibilities and of course the biological differences. Along with women, people with a family history of depression are also likely to develop the disease.
Economic conditions, especially the economic downfall is considered to be a major cause of depression not only in women, but also in men. Researches have shown that poor people, those who experience generational poverty are very likely pass it down to their children and grandchildren.
According to age group distribution of depression victims, people of 15 to 45 are more likely to undergo the depression. Children are though the least diagnosed of all of the high risk groups of depression, but they are not completely nonvulnerable to the risk.
Depression is of many types, and it’s necessary to understand the type for better treatment. Here’s the major classification:
Major depressive disorder: It’s also known as major depression. It’s symptoms may include completely disturbed work of a person, his/her sleep, study, eating. The person also enjoys once–pleasurable activities. It specifically prevents a person from functioning normally, may disable a person also. It may happen only once in lifetime, but it recurs throughout a person’s life.
Dysthymia: It’s also known as depressive disorder. It’s a less severe depression, but complex in nature. Its symptoms may not disable a person but can prevent one from functioning normally or feeling well. It can further be classified as follwwing:
Psychotic depression: It occurs when a severe depressive illness is accompanied by some form of psychosis, such as a break with reality, hallucinations, and delusions.
Postpartum depression: It’s diagnosed if a new mother develops a major depressive episode within one month after delivery.
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD): It’s an onset of a depressive illness during the winter months, when there is less natural sunlight. The depression generally lifts during spring and summer.
